Eastern Africa is often featured in Chobe River cruise itineraries. They are generally land tours to national parks. Africa is abundant with them. According to Wikipedia, there are 335 National Parks in Africa!
A couple of the parks you might visit in East Africa - Ngorongoro National Park and Serengeti National Park. You might also spend some time at Chobe National Park in Botswana.
To explore African river cruise destinations, we’ll break it down into four sections: northern, southern, western and eastern Africa.
Egypt
Riverboat travel in Africa is offered most commonly by major river cruise lines along the Nile River in Egypt. Although, the Nile is considered to be the longest river in the world, cruises only last a couple of days.
Some of the cities you might visit are Cairo, Giza and Luxor.
Sudan
Lake Nasser – a man-made lake – which is located in southern Egypt and northern Sudan might also be part of your itinerary. This is also a short cruise that takes place on a different ship.
One city you’ll visit along Lake Nasser is Khartoum, Sudan.
Botswana
In South Africa, Chobe river cruises are also featured by at least one of the major river cruise lines. Although, the Chobe River flows through Angola, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana, a cruise on this river will be in Botswana.
Some of the destinations in your Chobe River cruise itinerary will probably be Kasane, Kasenu Village, Chobe National Park and Okavango Delta.
Zimbabwe
African river cruise destinations usually feature Zimbabwe. It’s located just to the north of Botswana. One of the seven natural wonders of the world - Victoria Falls - is located in Zimbabwe. It is truly a spectacular site to see!
A day or sunset cruise on the Zambezi River is often included.
South Africa
Another land destination that could be part of your package is South Africa. If you visit South Africa for a Chobe River cruise, it will be where your trip begins or ends.
Places you might visit include Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Kruger National Park.
Chobe National Park in Botswana
We’ll discuss African river cruise destinations in West Africa. Before we do, though, we need to mention that this region is not very stable now, especially in Mauritania and Mali. Over the past few years, there have been outbreaks of violence. In January 2013 France began its military intervention by sending troops to the hostile area near Mopti and Gao, Mali. It is important to note that both Mauritania and Mali border Senegal, and Gambia shares a border with Mali and Senegal.
Senegal
There are a few companies that offer cruises along the Senegal River. The river flows through Senegal, Mauritania and Mali. If you plan to travel to Senegal, it should be done with caution and an awareness of current travel conditions and warnings.
Some of the cities you might visit on a Senegal River cruise are Dakar, St. Louis and Podor as well as a trip to Saloum Delta National Park.
Gambia
Also, on the west coast of Africa, the country of Gambia is completely surrounded by Senegal. The Gambia River flows through Guinea, Senegal and Gambia. Some travel companies feature cruises on this river. Any travel to this area should be done cautiously and with awareness to current travel conditions and warnings.
On a Gambia River cruise, your itinerary might include the city of Georgetown and Klang West National Park.
Kenya and Tanzania
Kenya and Tanzania are included in African river cruise destinations for Chobe River cruises. The Chobe is actually located in southern Africa, but the itinerary might also include some land tours in eastern Africa.
Destinations in Kenya will probably include Nairobi and Amboseli National Park.
Destinations in Tanzania you might visit are Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro National Park and Serengeti National Park.
